How it works

  1. 1The calendar starts from the date of Easter (16 April 2028), which sets Great Lent, Bright Week, Pentecost, and the Apostles' Fast.
  2. 2Then come the fasts and feasts with fixed dates: the Dormition Fast, the Nativity Fast, the great feasts with their eves, and the days between Christmas and Epiphany.
  3. 3Wednesdays and Fridays are fast days all year, so there are no weddings then either. What's left are the free days, with free Saturdays marked in green.

Frequently asked questions

When can't Orthodox weddings be held in 2028?

During the four fasts (Great Lent: 28 February – 15 April, the Apostles' Fast: 12–28 June, the Dormition Fast: 1–15 August, the Nativity Fast: 15 November – 24 December), in Cheesefare Week (21–27 February), at Easter and in Bright Week (16–23 April), between Christmas and Epiphany, on the great feasts and their eves, and on every Wednesday and Friday.

How many Saturdays are free for a wedding in 2028?

31. Most are in May, July, and September (5 each) and January and October (4 each). March and December have none, April only has 29 April, and June only 10 June.

Can you get married in June 2028?

Barely: the only free Saturday is 10 June. Saturday 3 June is the eve of Pentecost, and 17 and 24 June fall in the Fast of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul, which lasts 17 days in 2028 (12–28 June).

When is Orthodox Easter in 2028?

Orthodox Easter is on 16 April 2028. The last free Saturday before Great Lent is 19 February, and the first Saturday after Easter when weddings can be held is 29 April.

Can you get married on 8.8.2028?

Not in church, because 8 August 2028 falls in the Dormition Fast (1–15 August). The nearest free Saturday is 19 August.

Is the 2028 calendar official?

The dates are worked out with the same rules the Romanian Orthodox Church uses for its calendar, starting from the date of Easter, which is known years ahead. The official 2028 calendar usually comes out towards the end of 2027, so check your date with your parish priest before you confirm it with the venue.

Can you get married on a Wednesday or Friday?

Church weddings aren't officiated on Wednesdays and Fridays because they are fast days. A civil wedding can be held on any day the registry office is open, so many couples have it on Friday and hold the church wedding and party on Saturday.

Can you have a civil wedding during a fast?

Yes. The restrictions only apply to church weddings. Registry offices hold civil weddings all year, fasts included, on their own schedule.
