How it works

  1. 1The calendar starts from the date of Easter (2 May 2027), which sets Great Lent, Bright Week, Pentecost, and the Apostles' Fast.
  2. 2Then come the fasts and feasts with fixed dates: the Dormition Fast, the Nativity Fast, the great feasts with their eves, and the days between Christmas and Epiphany.
  3. 3Wednesdays and Fridays are fast days all year, so there are no weddings then either. What's left are the free days, with free Saturdays marked in green.

Frequently asked questions

When can't Orthodox weddings be held in 2027?

During the four fasts (Great Lent: 15 March – 1 May, the Apostles' Fast: 22–28 June, the Dormition Fast: 1–15 August, the Nativity Fast: 15 November – 24 December), in Cheesefare Week (8–14 March), at Easter and in Bright Week (2–9 May), between Christmas and Epiphany, on the great feasts and their eves, and on every Wednesday and Friday.

How many Saturdays are free for a wedding in 2027?

32. Most are in July and October (5 each) and September (4). April and December have none, March only has 6 March, June only 5 and 12 June, and August only 21 and 28 August.

Can you get married in June 2027?

Yes, but only two Saturdays are free: 5 and 12 June. Saturday 19 June is the eve of Pentecost, and 26 June falls in the Fast of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul (22–28 June).

Why is the Apostles' Fast only 7 days in 2027?

Because Easter is late, on 2 May. The fast would normally start after All Saints' Sunday (27 June), but the Holy Synod set a minimum of 7 days, so in 2027 it runs from 22 to 28 June, the same as in 2021.

Can you get married on a Wednesday or Friday?

Church weddings aren't officiated on Wednesdays and Fridays because they are fast days. A civil wedding can be held on any day the registry office is open, so many couples have it on Friday and hold the church wedding and party on Saturday.

Can you get married on 7.7.2027?

Not in church, because 7 July 2027 is a Wednesday, a fast day. You can have the civil wedding that day and the church wedding and party on Saturday 10 July.

Can you have a civil wedding during a fast?

Yes. The restrictions only apply to church weddings. Registry offices hold civil weddings all year, fasts included, on their own schedule.

When is Orthodox Easter in 2027?

Orthodox Easter is on 2 May 2027. The last free Saturday before Great Lent is 6 March, and the first Saturday after Easter when weddings can be held is 15 May.
